Poor Winston now has to look like Hannibal Lecter if he goes outside when there is snow. The family has begun putting a muzzle on him to keep him from eating too much snow. Although the mask does make him look like Hannibal Lecter, it seems to be at least partially effective.
When his mom was watching, he could still scoop up and eat some snow. When Winston was back inside, she removed the muzzle harness. There was quite a bit of snow inside it. The key factor is that the muzzle keeps him from eating so much that he gets sick.

According to the nutrition experts at Hill’s Science Diet, dogs eat snow for various reasons, including hydration, an underlying health condition, it’s part of their DNA instincts, or they like the cool treat. If they eat too quickly, excessive snow can induce vomiting due to air intake into the stomach. Most sources agree that clean, fresh snow is fine for dogs in limited quantities.
You should avoid permitting your dog to eat older snow or snow that may have road salt or other contaminants. While eating snow, an animal may ingest rocks, sticks, or other small objects. Eating large quantities of snow may lower your dog’s body temperature, causing hypothermia.
Please share if you like Winston’s special Hannibal Lecter “mask.”
