Mr. Pickles is a cat. He belongs to Cammie’s Grandma, who has been in the hospital. The family cared for the cat during the three weeks Grandma was gone, but Pickles missed his real Mom. When Grandma got home, the cat was hiding under the sofa, hesitant to come out. After some coaxing, Grandma was able to reunite with her cat.

Cats develop deep attachments to their “person.” Grandma is definitely Pickle’s person. When she arrived, she began calling him as soon as she entered. He was hiding well, and it took Cammie a few seconds to locate him under the couch. Grandma came in and sat down, still calling out. It took some kissing noises from his Momma before Pickles slowly extracted himself.
Peeking out tentatively, the cat wasn’t sure about things. When he saw her, he went near her legs, and Grandma scooped him up, finally reuniting with her cat. Grandma hugged Pickles tightly, and he snuggled right into her shoulder.
We often don’t realize that our pets are just as dependent on our companionship as we are on theirs. While Grandma was in the hospital, Cammie could provide Pickles with some comfort, but it wasn’t the same.
Every cat owner will tell you the same thing. I have two cats. One has bonded to my roommate and cries when she goes to work. I have become nothing more than his “spare human,” much the same as Pickles feels about Cammie. The other is bonded to me and must be in the same room as me.
We’re glad that this Grandma was able to reunite with her cat Pickles. Three weeks can feel like forever to an animal because they can’t read calendars.
