Disabled Mom Gets Daily Help From Unlikely Source: Her 2-Yr-Old Son!

Pomelo helps mom Wang with daily activities.

Most toddlers are not able to take care of their own needs, much less helping others with theirs. Yet for a little boy in Hunan, China, caring for his disabled mother is just part of his day. Pomelo is two, and both of his parents have cerebral palsy. His mother, Wang, has the most difficulty controlling her muscle spasms, so Pomelo stays close to help her out when she needs it.

In the beginning, the relationship between Wang and her husband was frowned upon by their families and friends. No one thought it was a good idea for two people with disabilities to get married and have a child, but after doing some research and learning cerebral palsy is not hereditary, they decided to go for it. Bringing Pomelo into their lives has been the ultimate blessing!

“As long as we persevere we have the right to fight for the life we want,” said Wang. “I have chosen to be a mother. I’m confident that I can bring up my son. Disabled people are people too. Where there’s life, there’s a way.”

Wang and her husband run a package pickup location, and they work long hours to make sure Pomelo will get the best education possible. They’ve already observed that he is quick to pick things up and very smart. In fact, it took Wang slipping on a wet floor just one time before her son learned to watch for hazards and help her navigate tricky spots.

In a video, viewers get a glimpse into the family’s daily life. It’s clear that Pomelo is a tremendous help for his parents. He helps Wang walk, feed herself, blow dry her hair, and put on her shoes. He also helps with household chores like cooking, clearing the table, and hanging wet clothes to dry.

As he goes about his day helping his loved ones, Pomelo is always cheerful and agreeable. When his parents are at work, he spends time with his grandparents, and he’s helpful to them as well.

After the video of Pomelo and his mother went viral, many people had strong opinions about their family dynamic. Wang says that while she sometimes “feels sorry” for her son, she is thankful for his help and plans to give him the best life she can. She has no regrets about having her child, and he seems perfectly happy to be useful to those he loves.

“Happiness is just a state of mind,” Wang said. “I always remind myself of that, and I don’t question why I’m disabled. I’ve got a hardworking husband, a lovely kid, parents, and parents-in-law who love me. Of course I’m content.”
