Being able to communicate with other people is essential… it completely alters how life can be lived. And that’s something Dawn had no problem with until fifteen years ago, when she began losing her ability to hear.

It became very apparent that this was happening when, as her sister describes, she would simply walk away when others were speaking to her, having no idea what was happening. And when she was 30-years-old, Dawn made her first appointment to be checked for hearing loss.

Her disability, of course, had a major toll on her life – keeping her from being involved in conversations, and depleting her of energy.

But one of the biggest struggles in her life was the fact that she had never heard her 8-year-old son’s voice since he had been born. Never had he been able to communicate with his mom in the traditional sense.

It wasn’t until 2 years ago that doctors told Dawn she was now eligible for a cochlear implant – great news that came with a lot of weight.
According to Cochlear.com, it is an “electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.”

So, it’s clear why the choice to undergo the surgery is not an easy one. It involved a lot of factors, risks and possible disappointment if the procedure failed.
But with strength, courage and a bigger goal, Dawn ultimately decided to go through with the surgery!
