As parents, we strive to instill in our children the wisdom to navigate life, enabling them to succeed as adults. We spend their childhood teaching them to live without us. The day you know you’ve been a good parent is when your child teaches you a life lesson on healing. Using a pile of rocks on the shoreline, Makenzie’s daughter laid out a brilliant message that will resonate with many of us.

The daughter begins by asking her mom to select one large rock that signifies the “biggest bad thing that happened to you.” She tells her mom to channel the bad thing into the rock. The rock is placed between them, and the daughter selects her rock, putting it on top of the first. They continue, with the size of the stones getting smaller as they build a tower of all the bad things that have happened in their lives. To prevent the tower from toppling, they must add smaller rocks to stabilize it.
What the daughter does next is the most inspiring part of this lesson on healing.
She knocks the tower down with a sweep of her hand, sending it tumbling.
“Why care about all the bad things that has happened? They don’t matter.” After tossing aside the first tower they built, the daughter hands her mom a new rock and asks, “What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?” Together, they built a new tower. This one, using flatter stones, needed no assistance to stay balanced.

The ultimate message from this lesson on healing is to focus on the positive aspects of life. Toss out the bad things and hang onto all the good stuff.
