While the first day of school is tough for many kids, the Scherlen family of Amarillo, Texas right in the middle on an unimaginably difficult season. For the Scherlen children, it was the first day in memory that their father would not drive them to school. Their father and Amarillo Police Department officer Justin Scherlen died two weeks ago due to complications in an off-duty vehicle collision.

On the first day of school earlier this week, the Amarillo Police Department banded together to give the kids a surprise they wouldn’t soon forget to honor the memory of their dad. Dozens of police officers surprised the kids by escorting them to school, then lined the hallway to give hugs and encouragement.
The Amarillo SChool District documented the beautiful moment when four year old Jackson hugged every officer in the hallway, each and every one giving him a little piece of his dad.
Jessica Scherlen said she thought her husband “would be very proud of how his brothers and sisters have stepped up to be here for his kids.”
