A 1-Woman Squad: Competitors Go Wild For Cheerleader Performing By Herself.

Nebraska cheerleader performs alone at state championships

Less than 2 weeks before the Morrill High School cheerleading squad was due to perform at the state championships, three of the four cheerleaders quit.

The sole remaining cheerleader, senior Katrina Kohel, was crushed. Her coach offered to bring her to the 3-day cheer and dance event in Grand Island, Nebraska just to watch the other teams compete, but Katrina wasn’t having it! She decided to compete anyway, all by herself. She spent the next week and a half reworking the routine into a one-woman show, then took the stage solo at the Heartland Event Center on February 17.

To her surprise, hers wasn’t the only voice cheering the familiar chants. The audience, which was filled with competitors from other schools from all over the state, showed their support by cheering along with Katrina the entire time!

“They are going to support me and cheer me on,” she recalls thinking. “Even if I mess this whole thing up, I will be OK. I’m doing this by myself and no matter what, it’s going to be OK.”
