For some animals, mothering comes easily, even in the most unlikely of ways. On one farm in Vale do ParaÃso, Brazil, a local farmer captured video of a chicken who became a surrogate mother to a litter of puppies. She explained that the puppy’s mother “wasn’t interested” in raising them, but her resident mother hen was more than willing to step in.
“On my farm in the rural zone, I realized the affection that the chicken has for the dogs, the puppies returned the affection immediately and greatly,” she wrote on the video. In the clip, we see the puppies snoozing comfortably while their chicken mom watches over them. She gets defensive when anyone walks too close to her babies and even tucks one of the dogs under her wing at one point.
