When a little boy named Chen Xiaotian was just 5 years old, he received shocking news: he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Just months after Chen was given the terrible diagnosis, Chen’s mother– Zhou Lu– discovered she had kidney disease.

Over the next two years, Chen and Zhou struggled together through their illnesses, encouraging one another and doing their best to care for one another. The mother-son pair would even sleep side-by-side at the hospital as Zhou started dialysis and as Chen underwent constant treatment.

As time passed, Chen’s cancer worsened. By the time Chen was 7, he’d lost his sight and was paralyzed. Meanwhile, Zhou’s kidneys began to fail her and doctors began searching for a match for a kidney transplant. That’s when doctors approached Zhou’s mother– Chen’s grandmother– with heartbreaking news.

“They told me that my grandson would not survive,”she said, “but his kidneys could help his mother, and also save two other lives as well.â€

But when she passed the message along to Zhou, the mother was crushed. “She absolutely didn’t want to hear any talk of that happening.â€

When the dilemma reached Chen’s ears, he told his mother that he was ready to go, but that he wanted to save her life. Just days later, Chen passed away and Zhou tearfully agreed to the operation, knowing this would mean she’d forever carry a part of her little boy. Before the operation, doctors paused for a moment of silence honoring Chen.

Chen’s kidney was a perfect match for Zhou and she made a full recovery. Doctors are calling Zhou’s recovery a miracle… and its all thanks to her brave little angel.
