Alex Hazen and her now husband, Matt, wanted to ensure their wedding day was special, not only for themselves, but their loved ones. Some of their most special surprises were for the bride’s grandmother, whose husband is no longer alive. Although it’s sad that he couldn’t be there, this thoughtful couple found ways to have him there in spirit.

It all started at the rehearsal dinner that took place the day before the wedding. Here, Matt surprised Grandma by sporting her late husband’s jacket. This alone was a delight for her, but this wasn’t the only plan they had for this special jacket. The next day, when Grandma got to her seat for the ceremony, she found that the spot next to was taken… by that same jacket and an old photo of her husband.
This simple yet powerful gesture deeply touched Grandma. In fact, Alex says that she didn’t let go of the jacket or photo for the rest of the day.
Bride’s Thoughtfulness Brings Grandmother Joy
But that isn’t where Alex and Matt’s kindness ends. When the bride’s grandpa passed away, she saved all of his white handkerchiefs. Then, when it came time to plan the wedding, the couple learned how to embroider. Why? So they could add a special message “from grandpa” before handing them out to family at the wedding.
“For happy tears,” the handkerchiefs reads. “Love, Grandpa.”
“Imagine how hard it was for her to go without him and then to feel so seen and loved,” a person writes in the comment section of TikTok, where the bride shares her story.
Although every single act of kindness brought this sweet Grandma joy, it seems that this surprise especially blew her away. Luckily, a photograph of her reacting to the gift was caught on camera and, in it, she is absolutely beaming with joy!
“This was her face when I gave it to her,” Alex shares. “She was so excited to have a piece of him with her.”
Although nothing can compare to a loved one still being alive, these thoughtful surprises truly made Alex and Matt’s wedding oh-so special for everyone involved.
Plus, they served as a great reminder of her grandparents’ 68-year long marriage, something this couple no doubt aspires to reach themselves.
“I miss him every day, but I felt him with me all day,” Alex says. “I can’t wait to run to him the second I get to heaven.”
