The hiking trails in Washington offer so many wonderous views. That being said, these forested areas are also full of a variety of creatures, some of which can be particularly dangerous to us humans. But sometimes, even when staying vigilant, a rare event like a cougar attack can happen. That’s exactly what happened to a group of cyclists near Fall City.

The harrowing event took place on Saturday afternoon. Five cyclists were making their way down a trail when, out of nowhere, a cougar attacked. The creature went after a 60-year-old woman in the group and chaos ensued.

Fearless Cyclists Save Their Friend During a Cougar Attack

Despite the immense fear the other four must have felt in that moment, together, they managed to get the cougar off of their friend. In doing so, they were able to keep the creature detained until help could arrive.

“It jumped from the side of the road and latched onto her, and her friends were able to detach and fight this thing off,” Sgt. Carlo Pace with the Washington State Fish and Wildlife Police says.

The 60-year-old woman was rushed to a hospital. Here, she was treated for injuries to her face, neck, and jaw. Thankfully, though, she’s already been released from the hospital. And without the help of her friends, that wouldn’t have been possible.

“They 100% saved their friend’s life,” Carlo says. “They were able to pin down a good size lion with its claws and teeth and everything else under a mountain bike until we arrived.”
