Sir Idris earned the esteemed title during King Charles’ New Year Honours. According to the BBC, the king chose him because of his charity work with young people. Earlier this year, Sir Idris launched an anti-knife crime campaign after 507 children were treated in English hospitals for knife injuries in only a year. He and his wife, Sabrina, also launched the Elba Hope Foundation. The Organization “invests in actionable solutions focused on empowerment through education, economic opportunity, and entrepreneurship” in the US, UK, and Africa.

“I receive this honour on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition, and resilience has driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation,” he said.

King Charles Recognized Several Other Celebrities During the New Year Honours

Interestingly, the royal family helped Sir Idris Elba jump to fame by naming him a beneficiary of the Prince’s Trust as a teenager. The trust awarded him a £1,500 grant to attend the National Youth Music Theatre programme.

Other notable celebrities who earned awards during the New Year Honours were singer Ellie Goulding and actor Cynthia Erivo. Ellie was appointed a Member of the British Empire because of her tireless work as an environmental ambassador. Cynthia was named a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
