Mom Bear Rushes To Rescue Cubs From Drowing In River

You can’t take your eyes off your kids for one second without them getting into some sort of ridiculous, hilarious, or even life-threatening situation. And we’re not just talking about human children…

Wildlife cameras captured footage of a mama bear fishing for salmon at the top of Brooks Falls in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. She appeared to be alone, but just a few moments into the video, one of her three cubs comes into the frame. Turning to look over her shoulder, she sees her baby floating toward her.

She turns and seemingly looks into the camera as if to say, ‘See what I have to put up with?’

But the little furry babe isn’t just coming over to tell her to hurry up, rather, he’s headed straight for danger… the current sweeps him right over the little waterfall’s edge and down he goes!

Mama just stands there for a second in disbelief, watching him continue down the river. She appears to let out some distraught moans/growls to get Junior’s attention. (He’s always been the troublemaker in the bunch). Knowing it’s shallow below the falls, she leaves him be.

Then she hears another commotion and looks back over her shoulder.

What’s this? Her little goody two shoes, the one who always does what she’s told? Great. Either Junior’s corrupting his sister or they’re in real danger here. Erring on the side of caution, she rushes to their rescue.

Mama bears are fiercely protective of their young, and since it takes a while for cubs to get the hang of swimming, there’s a possibility they could drown. So she makes a snap decision, deciding she needs to save them before finding food to feed them.

She rushes over to the side of the waterfall and strides back in, just as the third cub topples over the falls. Eventually, she gathers all of her little ones and brings them to safety, where it should be noted, they received the lecture of a lifetime.
