Twitter has been blowing up with news of a man dressed up as Batman walking the streets of Cumbria, a county in North West England. He’s not a masked vigilante, he’s a watchful protector, there to comfort local children frightened by the recent “creepy clown” craze.

The strange appearances of creepy clowns seems to have started with a few people dressed as clowns scaring kids in Greenville, South Carolina in late August. Since then, the phenomenon has spread across the United States, and this past weekend came the first reports of clown sightings in England. When those reports reached the ears of children in Cumbria, they were– of course– terrified. So a man named Liam put on a Batman suit to take a stand.

The idea came when folks from Cumbria Superheroes— a local superhero costume company– heard reports of kids being afraid. They knew they had to do something for the children in their community.
“We heard a lot of reports of kids being scared and not wanting to go to sleep, and Batman is what a lot of kids look up to.” Cumbria Superheroes told BBC Radio Cumbria, “So we though it was only in our duty to try and prove to the little ones that it is safe, and Batman is out there, looking for these clowns.”

People all over the world have been expressing a mixture of amusement and awe regarding the whole story!
So there’s a Batman chasing and fighting these clowns hanging around on street corners? What a time to be alive.

…But, for the parents and kids of Cumbria, the only response is gratitude for their Dark Knight.
