Owner Gives Up On Dog After Accident, So Vets Swoop In To Save His Life.

A Treeing Walker Coonhound named Cash was originally brought into a family for the sole purpose of aiding them in bear hunting. But when the poor pup was hit by a car, he was left with a badly broken leg that didn’t bode well for their expectations of him. Thankfully, that was only the beginning of his story.

His owner brought him to the vet after the accident, where they were told his leg would probably need to be amputated. Instead of helping Cash recover, they surrendered the dog to be euthanized. The vet was having none of that and quickly called in reinforcements to help save Cash’s leg – and turn his life around!

Cash’s surgery would be costly, so four organizations had to come together to make it happen. According to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, they teamed up with Potomac Highlands Animal Rescue, Middleburg Humane Foundation, and VCA SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists & Emergency to ensure Cash got the care he needed.

“[The vets] were discussing amputating Cash’s leg, which often is the more affordable option in these cases, but then AWLA and VCA SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists & Emergency offered to help out,” the Animal Welfare League wrote on Facebook. “Our staff veterinarian, Dr. Galati, along with Dr. Molero and Dr. Balogh from Southpaws, headed to MHF on their day off, donated surgery supplies, and were able to fix Cash’s broken leg!”

The surgery happened one week after Cash’s accident, and everything went perfectly!

“MHF is thrilled to report that Cash got to keep his leg,” the Middleburg Humane Foundation said in an update. “He recuperated today at the Foundation and then walked out of MHF this evening with his foster mom, his sweet eyes smiling and his tail wagging! He’ll have a second surgery in 6-8 weeks to remove the hardware.”

Despite the horrible lead-up to Cash’s surgery, he came out on the other side with a foster parent who will love him no matter what! We can’t wait for the moment he finds his perfect forever home!
