Churches may have been empty on Easter Sunday, but one voice brought millions together from inside Italy’s famed Duomo di Milano.

Opera singer Andrea Bocelli became a beacon of hope during the novel coronavirus pandemic as he sang in the empty cathedral – and in homes around the world.

Parishioners had to forgo traditional Easter celebrations because of COVID-19, so the mayor of Milan, along with church authorities, invited the famous musician to participate in a special performance with organist Emanuele Vianelli.

Bocelli gladly accepted and livestreamed his “Music for Hope” concert on YouTube.

“On the day in which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I’m honored and happy to answer ‘Sì’ to the invitation of the city and the Duomo of Milan,” Bocelli said. “Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we will hug this wounded Earth’s pulsing heart.”

Angelic is the best way to describe his renditions of “Panis Angelicus,” “Ave Maria,” “Sancta Maria,” “Domine Deus,” and finally “Amazing Grace.”

For the last song, he heads outside into the square. As he sings, we see empty streets in Paris, London, and New York. Of course, while Bocelli appears to be alone, he isn’t! Tens of millions tuned in for his stunning show and found an extra burst of joy, and that number will only grow.
