There are few couples more perfect than George and Amal Clooney.
Before George met Amal in 2013, the famous actor was a confirmed bachelor who was staunchly against ever marrying again. He’d been married and divorced once before, and now in his 50s, he thought that phase of his life was behind him. Then he met Amal, and all of his plans went out the window.
“If you know anything about my crazy life, you know that I’d pretty much committed to the idea of never marrying again,”George said. “But I started dating Amal, and I immediately knew that something was very different.â€
Amal felt the same way because she’d been focussing on her career for most of her adult life. An accomplished London lawyer, Amal was already well-known as an intellectual superstar in international human rights law, taking on massive crime conglomerates all over the world.
The two share a similar philanthropic drive to help others, and after a friend introduced them, they hit it off immediately.
“Of course she was beautiful,”George stated. “But I also thought she was fascinating, and I thought she was brilliant. Her life was incredibly exciting – the clients she was taking on and the superhuman work that she was doing. I was taken with her from the moment I saw her.â€
In the beginning, George used his trademark wit to woo Amal by writing her funny emails written “from” his dog, Einstein. Amal says that all of the uncertainty of being single melted away when she became close to George. Suddenly, the path before her was clear.
“It’s the one thing in life that I think is the biggest determinant of happiness, and it’s the thing you have the least control over,”she said. “Are you going to meet this person? I was 35 when I met him. It wasn’t obvious that it was going to happen for me. And I wasn’t willing or excited about the idea of getting married or having a family in the absence of that.â€
George says that the idea to marry her came naturally to him, too. While visiting a zoo, he watched some giraffes approach Amal and he snapped a photo of her as she smiled up at the animals. “I took a picture of her, and she was smiling,” George explained.
“I said to my buddy Ben, ‘You know, I think I should ask her to marry me.’ And Ben said, ‘I think that’s a good idea.'”
They got engaged in 2014, and Amal says that their union satisfied that desire she had to “just know.”
“It felt like the most natural thing in the world,”she said. “Before that experience, I always hoped there could be love that was overwhelming and didn’t require any weighing or decision-making.â€
In June 2016, Amal gave birth to their twins, Alexander and Ella. They seem to be happier than ever, and their enduring love is evident in just about every photograph we see of them. They look truly happy to be together!
The Clooney’s love story is a wonderful reminder that when it’s right, you’ll just know. Just when you might think it will never happen, along comes your very own George Clooney to turn your world delightfully upside down.
