A woman named Elizabeth Schmidt shared the most wholesome video that shows her little girl as she dances with a woman suffering from dementia, and the joy she brings the woman is almost tangible.
Her daughter, Josie, goes to a school that works directly with an assisted living facility and memory care facility. As Elizabeth shared on Instagram, “The kids venture over to spend time with the ‘grandmas and grandpas’ and experience some intergenerational learning and play” each day.
The brilliant concept gives children the opportunity to learn compassion and understand illness while also getting important one-on-one time with older generations. The kids offer warmth, happiness, and innocence that is therapeutic to those needing an escape from their fragile circumstances.
In the video, Elizabeth shows a glimpse of a day in the program. The kids and adults sit in a crowd and listen to music. The little girl is having an amazing time and she dances and giggles in a heartwarming interaction with a woman. The woman adores Josie and dances along with a beaming smile until she doubles over in laughter.
“It has been such a gift to watch her bring joy and laughter to the residents and to watch her spirit blossom through getting to know them,” Elizabeth added. “She has an incredibly special bond with her ‘grandmas and grandpas’ upstairs. I am proud of the sweet, silly, wonderful little person she is.”
