Being a “pizza man” might not seem like an illustrious position in life, but when you’re the Heights Pizza Man, it makes you pretty special. When Pizza Man owner Chris Kolstad noticed people searching his dumpster for food, he made a plan. He posted a notice on Facebook, asking people to reach out, and he promised to apply a healthy dose of pizzeria kindness.

The post went viral, with others vowing to add their assistance to the “pizzeria kindness” mission.

A Facebook post from Heights Pizza Man that reads:
I don't even know how to start this post but here goes..
Recently, we've noticed a rapidly increasing volume of evidence of people eating out of our dumpster. Please do not eat out of our dumpster. Nobody deserves that. If you are that desperate for food, please come ask. If you are too embarrassed to ask, find a way to call us and ask if there is a way to leave a small cheese pizza outside the back door or something. You don't even have to see us. If you are the ones doing so, leave me a note and we will find a way to leave any extras or mistakes out back so you have something to eat without going through the trash.
If you see this, I will be leaving a cheese pizza outside the back door in the spot you've been leaving boxes.

Through a donation link, people have provided over $4,000 to help cover the costs of making sure people have food. Other food vendors are contributing to ensure that no one goes hungry. They are donating to local food banks and providing free cheese pizzas to those who ask. To avoid embarrassment, they will leave a pizza outside the back door for people to pick up.

According to Pizza Man Chris, they have helped more than 100 people suffering from food insecurity. When you add the numbers using the food bank donations, the total amount likely increases. When the pizzeria’s kindness reached a large family that was struggling, the restaurant received this heartfelt note.

A "thank you" note that reads:

Pizza Man,
I wanted to personally thank you! We are a large family going through a hard time and I sent a message on FB asking for a little help. You responded right away & told me you would get me taken care of.
That was last night at closing and today I'm heading your way to get food for myself and family. What you guys are doing is amazing and so many of us are struggling. This act of kindness from you to our family is so appreciated. Thank you!

There is no better thing in life than an act of kindness. That kindness can come from a humble pizzeria, or just a smile of acknowledgement. How we step up and help one another tells its own tale.

For Chris Kolstad, kindness comes in the form of a cheese pizza left by his rear door. He is using extra donations to help keep the local Columbia Heights food bank stocked. You can keep track of this effort by following the Heights Pizza Man page on Facebook.

Please share.
