When Blue Bloods ended after 14 seasons on CBS, fans weren’t sure what they’d do without the Reagan family. The cast wasn’t thrilled, either. It seems no one really wanted the show to end, and it looks like we’ll get more blue in our lives. According to Deadline, the Reagan universe isn’t ending just yet. CBS ordered a Blue Bloods spinoff with the working title Boston Blue for the 2025-2026 season. The show will reportedly star Donnie Wahlberg Danny Reagan and will take him back to his relief hometown of Boston.

Boston Blue Wasn’t Actually Created As A “Blue Bloods” Spinoff
Although fans hoped they’d one day get a spinoff of the beloved show, Boston Blue didn’t come together specifically for the Reagan family. Deadline reported that CBS and CBS Studios produced Blue Bloods and conceived Boston Blue, but not for Donnie.
The premise originally revived around a Los Angeles cop transplanted to Boston to work with a new team. But after exploring the script, executives thought it might be nice to make the cop a New York transplant. The change from an LAPD to an NYPD cop opened the door for Donnie to return as Danny Reagan.
Blue Bloods was a huge part of Donnie’s life, and he cherished every minute with his on-screen family. He told Andy Cohen Live that Tom Selleck had come to the set to watch him film his final scenes as Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods.
“When he shows up to watch you work and to be there to say goodbye to everyone,” Donnie continued, “and like, I’m filming the scenes. I’m already emotional. I look across the room, and I see him. He’s really tall, and he’s standing above everyone in the back corner just watching with tears in his eyes. It just was like the waterworks turned on. I could literally cry just thinking about it.”
There is no word on whether we’ll see any other familiar characters on the Blue Bloods spinoff, but we can’t wait to see what happens next.
