Therapy Horses Wake Kids From Anesthesia In The Silliest (And Cutest) Way

A young girl lays in a hospital, not fully conscious. She looks over at a mini horse that is playing a mini keyboard being held by a woman.

If you’ve ever been put under anesthesia before, you understand how disorienting it can be when first waking up. Sometimes, this process can even be a bit scary, especially for kids and teens. The kind folks at Mini Therapy Horses recognize this to be true. That’s why they make sure to visit children’s hospitals as often as they can. Located in Calabasas, California, this beloved nonprofit added Shriners for Children Medical Center on their list of sites to visit.

Now, you might be wondering… what on Earth is it like to have a mini horse around when someone wakes up from anesthesia? Well, for starters, these adorable mini horses play an active role in the process. For example, one named Black Pearl adores waking kids up with her keyboard! I could explain more, but I think it’s best if you check out Black Pearl in action for yourself…

“I too want to be woken out of a coma by every key on the piano played at once over and over again by a small horse,” a commenter hilariously writes. Others add, “Does this mean she’s in stable condition” and “If I ever go under for surgery someone get this horse [specifically].”

Want a Better Experience Waking Up from Anesthesia? This California Nonprofit’s Mini Horses Would Love to Help

These horses were trained by Victoria Nodiff-Netanel, a former dressage competitor with a great love for these beautiful animals. In fact, the horses are fully potty-trained, making their visits safe and hygienic. Speaking of which, they don’t just visit folks waking up from anesthesia!

“Penelope Von Schweets helped distract our friend and his mama while he waited for his surgery,” the above video’s caption reads. “Being a horse family, Penelope brought a little bit of home to Shriners So Cal!”

It’s amazing what a little extra love and support can do in particularly nerve-racking times of life!
