The Lifeguards at Florida’s Flagler Beach got a surprise the other day when they saw an animal struggling in the waves. Chase Hunter and Leo Peters worked in tandem to rescue a deer. Chase paddled out on a board and wrestled the deer into his arms. Leo swam out and assisted Chase in bringing the deer back to shore.

While the two were rescuing the deer, they noticed two sharks swimming around the helpless animal. A torrential downpour and heavy waves hampered the rescue effort. They brought the deer to the shore, but their job was not yet done. Fire rescue personnel were present to assist in getting the deer to shore and ensuring it was in a safe area across Florida State Road A1A before release.

Although this particular water rescue might be unusual, the lifeguards at Flagler Beach stay pretty busy. The United States Lifesaving Association reports the rescue of 241 people in 2024, with 1800 preventative actions taken by the lifeguards at the beach.
During interviews with Orlando’s Fox affiliate, the two lifeguards were happy with their achievement. Leo’s biggest takeaway from the day’s events is that deer scream loudly. Chase told the interviewer, “We have a job to do. We save lives, whether it’s a human life or, in this case, a deer.”
