9 Harrowing Tales Of Shipwreck Survival

3. Richard Van Pham

Richard Van Pham set out on what was supposed to be a 4 hour tour from Long Beach, California to Catalina Island. Stormy weather off the coast broke Van Pham’s mast and disabled his motor.

The sailor had no family to report him missing and no radio to call for help, so the helpless man drifted for three months entirely on his own.

He survived by trapping and killing a sea turtle, then snaring seagulls that came to feed on its remains.

When the crew of a US drug hunting boat found him, Van Pham was grilling a seagull on a makeshift grill with wood from his boat to feed the fire.
