Maurice and Maralyn Bailey were British citizens who set sail for New Zealand with the intention of emigrating.

Their 31 foot sailboat was struck by a whale and started taking on water. The couple escaped on an inflatable raft with all their meager supplies.

The fished for several months using makeshift hooks and gathered water from condensation to survive. They drifted for 117 days and started to sink into madness but finally a Korean fishing boat spotted them and came to their aid.
