You can’t judge a book by its cover… though, Kenny would argue that’s not always the case, at least when it comes to fruit. At 81 years old, this Navy veteran is incredibly popular on TikTok with over 2.6 million followers. Here, you’ll find him going on all sorts of adventures. In doing so, he proves that you’re never too old to try something for the first time — for Kenny, this includes dragon fruit.

From the moment Kenny spots the unusual-looking fruit, he doesn’t like it one bit. In fact, he can’t even guess what it is, first calling it a turnip or pineapple. No matter what it is, though, he’s sure of one thing: “It’s ugly looking!”

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or the strawberry pear, is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea. They grow from cactus and have a particularly odd appearance both inside and out. They’re said to taste light a cross between a kiwi and a pear. But for Kenny, no amount of sweetness can mask the visuals of this polarizing fruit.

“It looks like ants or bed bugs or whatever. They’ll be crawling out of their pretty soon,” Kenny says, later adding, “I don’t want no part of that.”

Even though the caption of his video jokes that he’s “traumatized,” it’s clear that Kenny has fun with these videos. No matter your age, it’s incredibly inspiring to see him try new things, even at 81 years old!
