Jasper Maskelyne was originally a British stage magician hired to entertain the troops during the war. According to lore, Maskelyne convinced British officers that his skills could be better used to deceive the Nazis. He did so by creating the illusion of a German warship on the Thames using mirrors and a model.
Maskelyne formed the ‘A’ Force deception department, and– with the help of his team– utilized camouflage, illusion and escape artistry to fool the German military.
