  An all-female brigade of Soviet Union bomber pilots became knows as the “Night Witches” because of the silence of their planes during nighttime attacks.

  Women were originally barred from combat during WWII, but on October 8, 1941 Joseph Stalin deployed 3 units of female military aviators to drop bombs on the German military. The women were all volunteers in their late teens and early twenties.
