1980s Christmas Track Hit The Billboard Charts This Week And Might Finally Dethrone Mariah

Last Christmas

There are some songs we just can’t live without during the holiday season. We’re a sucker for the classics like Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and The Little Drummer Boy. There’s something about Kenny and Dolly belting out Christmas to Remember that just gets us in the holiday spirit. Of course, we all know this is also the time of year when Mariah Carey thaws out her red and white to tell us, “It’s time” for All I Want for Christmas. The song climbs the Billboard Hot 100 chart year after year during the holiday season. This year, a well-loved song will give Mariah a run for her money. Last Christmas by Wham! According to Billboard for the Hot 100 dated November 15, Mariah sits at 31, and Wham! It isn’t far behind at 43.

Could “Last Christmas” Dethrone “All I Want For Christmas”

We would certainly love to see Wham! And Mariah Carey battles it out. They are both fabulous songs, but there’s something about Last Christmas that hits the soul a bit deeper for us. Sadly, George Michael, one-half of the Wham! duo passed away on December 25, 2016, at just 53. Before his death, George had mixed feelings about Last Christmas.

Per American Songwriter, George Michael’s former manager, Simon Napier-Bel, told The Telegraph that George knew Last Christmas was a major hit but didn’t love it as his legacy.

“He was always slightly upset by the fact [that] he naggingly knew it was the best thing he ever wrote,” the manager told The Telegraph. “George, above all, really wanted to be remembered as a great songwriter. And I think at the bottom of his mind … it was rather annoying that the song he got so perfect was a Christmas song.”

George may not have loved Last Christmas, but we sure do, and we’d love to see it top All I Want For Christmas this year.
