Here Are 10 DIY Halloween Props That Will Make Your House Frighteningly Fantastic!

Halloween props. Left frame is a bubbling cauldron. Right frame is a portal to beyond.

With Halloween just around the corner, it is time to begin ramping up for a ghoulishly scary time! We all watch the movies and see the awesome props they use. Everything is realistic and creates stunning visual effects. We discovered some great props you can make at home with common household items. Are you ready to embark on a hauntingly gruesome scavenger hunt?

1. Spiderwebs Without The Arachnids.

In Hollywood, they use a webcaster gun to spin authentic-looking spiderwebs. This simple tool is a glue gun that has a connection to compressed air. As the heat from the gun melts the glue stick, the air blows it into a fine string. It’s glue, so it sticks to everything. You can buy a home version of this tool from Amazon that uses the blower from a shopvac to “spin” the web.

2. Grab A Package Of Raw Meat And Disgust Your Friends.

You can make realistic-looking fake raw hamburger that is 100% edible, and a bit on the sweet side. When you rip the plastic wrap off your hamburger and begin chowing down, more than one of your friends will probably run from the room! This mix begins by melting marshmallows and butter, adding some Rice Krispies, red velvet cake mix, and other ingredients. Once it is the consistency of raw hamburger, you can package it in authentic Styrofoam trays, print a label, and haul it out for your party!

3. Milk Jugs And A Heat Gun Make Great Skulls.

Most of us recycle our plastic milk jugs. While you are still recycling, in a way, you can use these discarded items to create realistic-looking skulls. I’m not going to lie. This one takes a bit of creativity and some artistic talent. By heating the jug using a heat gun, you can shape the softened plastic using common tools to create the shape of a skull. Most people use a resin skull as a mold, then cut the jug replicas off the mold to finish it.

4. Fill Cheap Halloween Masks To Make Creepy Heads.

Using a foam mixture available at big box home improvement warehouses, you can fill any creepy mask. Once you have your foam-filled head, add some straw-filled clothing for like-sized porch decorations. This one does require some safety precautions. Please follow all directions on the package, especially ventilation requirements.

5. Adding Motion Sensors To Almost Any Halloween Prop.

If you want to add motion sensors to almost any prop, you can add this DIY tweak fairly inexpensively. The equipment is easily available on Amazon or in most big box hardware centers. This is a longer video, but it contains a lot of detail and explains the process from the beginning to the end.

6. Flying Ghosts To Scare Your Neighbors

This is a little bit of a daunting installation, but the end result will have the whole neighborhood screaming! The video is another longer one. It shows the entire process, from building anchor points to the final flying ghosts. This one will take several days to set up, so plan accordingly.

7. Turning Your Yard Into A Portal To Other Worlds

This is another longer, complex project, but the end results are stunning. Using pink insulation foam, you create the structure. Once that step is complete, you can add visual effects that create a surreal-looking doorway into the unknown.

8. Spiders Are Always Creepy!

Although you can buy a big black garbage bag, fill it with leaves, and add some legs, we found a cool, life-like spider design. This one takes more effort, but if you’re serious about your Halloween decor, this will take your yard to the next level!

9. Pool Noodles Make Awesome Haunted Scarecrows!

This is a cheap and easy prop to haunt your yard. The skeleton frame uses standard pool noodles, cut with a sharp blade, and painted black (because a fluorescent green or pink skeleton isn’t scary). Plastic pumpkins for the head are available at any craft store, and pool noodles are at the dollar store. This can be a lighted prop, or you can mount ground lights to illuminate it.

10. Halloween Is Not Complete Without A Bubbling Witch’s Cauldron!

Witches are a Halloween staple. If you have automated witches in your yard, you need them hanging out around a bubbling cauldron! This DIY project uses common products that are easy to obtain. The process is not too difficult, but the results are incredible!

We hope you found the perfect projects and props to make your yard frighteningly haunted. DIY projects can be fun. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination to modify our suggestions to fit your needs and skill levels. Get the kids to help with some of the building!
