“Alex and I have a very unique story. We met while living in different countries. I’m originally from California but was in Ukraine visiting family while Alex lived in Washington. We met on the Internet, but one wonderful detail about Alex wasn’t revealed to me until later on. When I first looked through his Instagram photos, I thought he was so handsome and way out of my league. I also admired his talented photography- he took beautiful photos of nature. So I was shocked when Alex messaged me. I decided to play hard to get and make him wait it out a few days before responding. Once I did, we had a great conversation. We continued to build a solid friendship but our feelings for each other grew stronger over time. A month went by and we were still in different countries, but had talked on the phone a lot and saw each other through Skype. One evening, Alex told me he had something important to tell me but was too afraid. He asked to talk about it the following weekend because he wanted some time to gather his thoughts and figure out how to say it. Alex and I are both religious Christians and when we hung up the phone that night, I prayed. I cried uncontrollably as I prayed to God that Alex wasn’t sick. I realized in that moment how grateful I was that he was alive. As I put the pieces together in my head, it suddenly dawned on me what Alex was going to tell me- he was handicapped. I had a revelation and just knew with certainty that that had to be his news. When the weekend finally came, he called me and with a trembling voice began to say, “It happened 6 years ago…” I quickly stopped him and said, “I know what you’re going to tell me and I love you anyways.” There was silence for a minute and Alex was in complete shock. I truly fell in love with him, and the wheelchair didn’t change that. I was just so grateful that he was okay. A week after I returned from Ukraine, Alex came to visit me. And in February 2015, he proposed. I couldn’t be any more excited to call this man my husband. Love knows no bounds.”
