Every year, Cats Protection hosts the National Cat Awards to shine a light on the special felines that are making the world a better place. This year’s event took place last Tuesday at Wilton’s Music Hall in London, where one kitty received the coveted title of National Cat of the Year. Zebby, a “hearing cat,” lives with 66-year-old Genevieve Moss. Because his owner is deaf, Zebby remains alert to any unusual sounds throughout the night.

“He has become my night watchman, my postman and guardian,” said Genevieve, according to USA Today. “He seems to know that when the phone rings, he needs to alert me. At nighttime, if my security light goes on, he seems to know to wake me up and he does so by tapping my face.”
Along with National Cat of the Year, Zebby was also celebrated in the Family Fur-ever category. This award goes to “cats that go the extra mile for families,” according to the Cats Protection website. As Genevieve’s closest companion, Zebby fits this description to a T. It’s worth noting that the feline never received any formal training to become a hearing cat. He simply recognized that his owner needed a little extra help.
“I am so proud of Zebby for showing the world how intuitive and caring cats can be, and what a positive effect they can have on people’s lives,” said Genevieve. “I can’t imagine life without Zebby and I’m over the moon that he’s been honored in the National Cat Awards.
Ashley Fryer, the event’s organizer, was especially moved by Zebby’s connection with his owner.
“Their story highlights the powerful bond that exists between people and their cats,” Ashley said. “He’s a shining example of the joy and comfort a cat can bring.”
Zebby received some great prizes as National Cat of the Year, including a special trophy and a pet store voucher for Genevieve to buy him extra treats!
