“Giant marrows have roughly a 75% split rate, and last year Sarah grew a 162.5-pound marrow that was disqualified because of a tiny split. It was heavier than the U.S. record of 152.5 pounds and just half a pound shy of the North American (Canadian) record of 163 pounds,” the organization shared.
Sarah Witty Took Incredible Care of Her Prize-Winning Zucchini
Sarah Witty’s zucchini had to be very carefully pruned, fed, and covered in order to be a record breaker. Not only did she grow a gigantic zucchini, but she blew the record out of the water.
“After planting three plants, two marrows split, leaving just one. Then a Nor’easter dumped 5 inches of rain on her patch. Sarah covered the entire plant with a tarp and eventually had to cut off three-quarters of the plant to prevent sudden growth surges that could trigger a last-minute split,” the Facebook post explains. “But the marrow held strong. It came in at 170 pounds, a full 7 pounds over the previous North American record!”
Those who know Sarah Witty swelled with pride after her win.
“Secretariat!!! We made it, guys. I learned so much about giant fruit gardening through this baby. I feel safe in saying that Sarah worked HARD for this win!!” A fan wrote.
This person agreed, writing, “YEEEESSSSS!!! I’ve never been so invested in a Zucchini as we’ve all watched her stress over the last week !!! CONGRATS SARAH!”
Even those who don’t know Sarah Witty are proud of her accomplishment. “YESSSSSS! I’m so thrilled for her. “All the strangers on the internet are invested,” someone wrote.
