The role of a father is important in every child’s life. After Gabriella Guardado’s mother left her abusive father when she was 10-years-old, Guardado and her four siblings were brought under the wings of a new stepdad who stepped up to the plate to help fill their father’s shoes.

David Lynde became Gabriella’s father throughout the rest of her childhood. She always wanted David to be her legal father but her biological father would never sign off on the adoption papers. At 18-years-old she stopped trying because she thought there was nothing else she could do. Then her boyfriend told her about ‘adult adoption’ and the now 22-year-old Gabriella decided to give Lynde, 53, a heartwarming birthday surprise he would never forget.

As David began to open up his birthday bag he pulled out a pen and then kept digging to find papers. He began to read them and couldn’t believe his eyes.

“Do you know what that is?” Gabriella asked him.

“Am I adopting you?” Lynde asked as he began to cry.

Even though Gabriella hasn’t had David’s last name she has always felt like he was her dad. “You’ve been my dad and I know legal papers don’t change anything,” she said.

“Gabby you have no idea how much that means to me,” Lynde while choked up. “You have no idea.”

Gabriella’s mother Lori Ann, 44, said the gesture was amazing and knows how much David appreciated it.

“I know this is something she has wanted, she is very strong-headed and so to see her do it and see the appreciation she has for him,” said Lori Ann. “Growing up it was not the easiest, but he hung in there and never stopped loving them and anything they needed he was always there and it all paid off.”
