Elf is an iconic Christmas movie from 2003. With Will Ferrell, Bob Newhart, and James Caan heading up the cast list, it was destined for greatness. The list of megastars in the movie is almost endless. It’s one of those movies that people either love or hate, and it has very few in-between votes. The smiling Buddy the Elf is well-known by nearly everyone. When Will Ferrell sat in the stands at a Los Angeles Kings hockey game dressed as Buddy, people noticed. But there was a twist.

Yes, Will Ferrell did attend the Kings game as Buddy, but he was slightly out of character. Buddy was a happy-go-lucky elf who was unbearably cheerful. The rendition that showed up at the hockey game looked a little spent.

Not only was Will Ferrell sporting an unruly mop of gray hair, but he was looking surly. The final touch was a fake cigarette dangling from the elf’s mouth. He may have dressed like Buddy the Elf, but Will acted more like his movie bio-dad (the James Caan character).

Will Ferrell may have been upset that the Kings game wasn’t going well. The score sat at four-all for a bit, although the Kings won the game 5 – 4 against the Flyers. Perhaps the Flyers mascot, Gritty, was overly annoying?

Whatever was going on, Will Ferrell was wearing the Buddy costume at the Kings game, but it seems he put the character’s persona in the penalty box. The general appearance and demeanor were a big break from typical Buddy banter. Perhaps being away from the North Pole for 21 years has hardened Buddy?
