The company’s business model has shifted from in-person meetings to an online platform that has changed millions of lives. The company rebranded several years ago to WW and hired big-name spokespeople like Oprah Winfrey, Jessica Simpson, and Charles Barkley. Oprah stepped down last year amid controversy that she took a weight loss drug to help her lose 40 pounds. The news, coupled with a former CEO’s failed attempts to turn things around, resulted in WeightWatcher’s parent company, WW International, filing for bankruptcy.

A New CEO Hopes To Bring WeightWatchers Back From Bankruptcy
Tara Comonte joined WeightWatchers as CEO in September 2024. She hopes to turn WeightWatchers around and wants members to continues to trust the company through the bankruptcy proceedings.
“For more than 62 years, WeightWatchers has empowered millions of members to make informed, healthy choices, staying resilient as trends have come and gone,” Tara Comonte, Chief Executive Officer of WeightWatchers, said in a statement. “The decisive actions we’re taking today, with the overwhelming support of our lenders and noteholders, will give us the flexibility to accelerate innovation, reinvest in our members, and lead with authority in a rapidly evolving weight management landscape. As the conversation around weight shifts toward long-term health, our commitment to delivering the most trusted, science-backed, and holistic solutions—grounded in community support and lasting results—has never been stronger, or more important.”
WeightWatchers addressed the bankruptcy on Instagram, writing, “We’re here to stay. Today, WeightWatchers made an important step towards securing our financial foundation so we can better serve our members for the decades to come.”
The news made many WeightWatchers fans happy.
“Woosh! Thankful our relationship isn’t ending …hahahahha you’re stuck with me til death does us part,” someone wrote.
This person agreed, “Weight Watchers is part of my lifestyle and I intend to keep it that way!”
