When the family dog was examining something in the yard, they assumed it was a turtle. As the dog continued poking at the item with his nose it made a sudden movement. Within seconds, the object moved, then stood on wobbly legs. The dog had discovered a fawn hidden in the grass.

At first, the dog seemed to be checking out the fawn to see if it was real. The fawn appeared curious, but not frightened, as it made a few tentative bounces. The friendly dog’s tail was wagging fast as he sniffed this new forest oddity.
Before long, the fawn scampered off to join its mom, who was lying nearby. The watchful mother deer had watched the two new friends and did not intervene. If she had felt her fawn was in danger from the dog, she would have jumped up to protect the baby. Both animals looked back at the dog as if they were wishing it well and telling him they would see him soon.

Wait until the dog finds out that his new little friend has a twin! The fawn seems to be asking its mom if they can come back and play tomorrow. Even though the dog was much bigger than the fawn, it seemed to sense the fragility of the tiny animal. Its sniffs were gentle and non-threatening. Once the baby was up and moving, the dog almost seemed to escort it back to the mother deer, veering off in the opposite direction.
Hopefully, if the deer brings her twins back, the golden retriever gets a chance to play with them. Caroline Ecker might have a front row seat to a wonderful budding friendship. Nature is amazing.
