Volunteers And Community Come Together To Rescue 950 Cold-Stunned Sea Turtles.

For nearly 50 years, Sea Turtle Inc. has worked hard to rescue and rehabilitate turtles. Still, even they’re blown away by how many turtles needed their help last weekend at South Padre Island in Texas. When the temperature drops severely, these creatures experience a cold-stunning event. In other words, it’s so cold that a sea turtle can no long regulate their own body temperature.

This, of course, is life-threatening. According to the Sea Turtle Inc. website, during these times, a turtle is awake but unable to move or swim. This also means that drowning is possible. Thankfully, though, they got help just in time.

Over the course of four days, staff of Sea Turtle Inc. along with volunteers and others in the community rallied together to save these turtles. In doing so, a whopping 950 were rescued! This makes it the second largest cold-stunning for the non-profit.

Once the temperatures were back to a safe level, those same folks came together to return these sweet turtles back to their homes. Needless to say everyone is happy with how everything turned out — including the once cold sea turtles!
