Tom Selleck may have a longrunning and hugely successful career in Hollywood, but that’s not what he’s most proud of. Tom considers his biggest fortune in life to be his relationship with his family, especially with his wife, Jillie Mack.
The Blue Bloods star recently published his memoir, You Never Know, which hits stores on May 7th. In the pages, he wrote about his “accidental” career and his life with Jillie and his two children; Kevin Selleck, 58, and Hannah Selleck, 35.
Ahead of the release, Tom spoke with PEOPLE and shared some insight into the project that took him four years to complete.
“I don’t have the hooks that a lot of people do,” he told the publication. “I didn’t rehabilitate myself or have this tragic life; I had my own share of certainly ups and downs, but I’ve been very fortunate.”
Tom Selleck admitted that his route to fame wasn’t like most. He was never “bitten by the acting bug.” He simply wanted to work, and he happened to be good at acting, despite never taking a class before jumping in. And he was never seeking fame.

In fact, Tom avoids the typical celebrity life at all costs. While most actors prefer living in the city, giving autographs, and doing promotional work, he does the opposite. Tom treats his time on set like any other job—he drives there in the morning and then heads back at night to spend time with his wife in their home, which is tucked far away from the hustle and bustle.
Tom and Jillie moved to a sprawling farm in Ventura Country, CA, in 1988, one year after saying “I do.” And that’s where they prefer to spend their free time—enjoying and supporting each other.
The couple has always opted for a simple and private life, and Tom said the secret to their marital success is simple. They’re best friends. In fact, “the friendship” is what he loves most about his wife. That and “Jillie’s sense of humor.”
The 79-year-old also appreciates the partnership he has with Jillie. She’s his biggest supporter and best teammate, and he likes to spend his evenings sitting by her side while they read through and perfect his Blue Bloods scripts.
“I’m one of the last guys to see it, and I’m a good editor,” shared Tom, who serves as one of the show’s executive producers.
When Tom Selleck isn’t working, he likes to sit and reflect on his life well-lived.
“A cigar and a glass of whiskey is a nice way to end the day,” he shared. “I’ve had a very good life, a very lucky life. I don’t know if it’s what I figured I’d be doing, but it’s with a lot of gratitude.”
