Some things are worth the wait! Thomas McMeekin and Nancy Gambell met when they were still in high school. Thomas was smitten with the other student, and the pair finally started dating in college. Unfortunately, the relationship didn’t last for long. Both Thomas and Nancy ended up marrying different people, not seeing each other again until their 50th high school reunion. 10 years later, though, something changed.
Thomas, now a dermatologist in Florida, was single. So was Nancy. When the pair met up again at their 60th high school reunion, they were looking at each other through different eyes. Not only did they fall back in love, but they decided that, this time, it would be for keeps.
Staff members at Thomas’s practice, Academic Alliance in Dermatology, were eager to get involved with their coworker’s proposal. With their help, the 78-year-old planned a romantic surprise for Nancy’s arrival at the Tampa International Airport.
“He kept talking about it every single day,” said medical assistant Angelia Fedrick, according to Insider. She and the rest of Thomas’s colleagues were certain that Nancy wouldn’t turn him down. They even made a giant sign reading, “She said yes!”
“He knew what he was going to say and he followed through with what he was going to do,” said Samari Rivera, another medical assistant. “Find me a man like that.”
When the moment finally came, Thomas presented his sweetheart with a bouquet of red roses. Then, he got down on one knee and proposed.
“It’s been sixty years since we first met,” he said to her. “You have always been the one that I’ve had a crush on since your cheerleader days.”
Needless to say, after receiving such a beautiful proposal, Nancy said yes! Thomas’s coworkers caught the whole thing on camera, sharing sweet clips and photos on TikTok. The couple’s engagement has gone viral online, with commenters gushing over the unique love story.
