With 1 million followers on TikTok alone, Hannah Tyre is helping the beauty industry become a more diverse and welcoming place.
Hannah was born with osteogenesis imperfecta. This genetic disorder affects the bones, causing them to be very fragile. Because of this, the 27-year-old uses a wheelchair to get around.
“My bones lack collagen, and so they’re very fragile,” Hannah said. “I actually fractured my arm last Friday. So I kind of have dealt with fractures and surgeries and asthma and other different little things to do with my disability.”
Although Hannah’s disability has presented her with challenges, they haven’t stopped her from pursuing her passion for makeup, a love she discovered as a child with the help of her mom.
“I really just got into beauty and makeup,” she said. “My mom started selling Avon when I was little, and I started going to all the little meetings with her, and I started playing around and I would test her lipsticks and the eyeshadows.”
By the time she was 12 years old, Hannah got a huge makeup kit for Christmas. With it, she was able to start her own YouTube channel like all of the other beauty influencers she started following.
Since then, her platform has grown beyond YouTube and into something so much bigger! With her content, Hannah is able to raise awareness of her disability while also proving that you don’t need to look a certain way to feel beautiful.
“Growing up I didn’t see a lot of women, or really anybody, in the media with a disability,” Hannah said. “So I kind of wanted to do something to show people with disabilities that you can do this, too. I think it’s really awesome that the beauty industry is becoming more diverse and really showcasing different types of beauty … and I’m proud to somewhat have a little part to do with it.”
