A tweet posted by 19-year-old Jake Smitka from Amsterdam, New York is going viral. The post, published just two days ago, has already been retweeted over 81 thousand times and gained over 100 thousand likes. The reason why? It tells the story of a beautiful friendship between man and beast… or rather, teenager and squirrel.

“Yes I found this squirrel. And yes he is my companion/son now.” writes Jake in the caption of a snapchat video of an adorably baby squirrel running up his leg and arm. Jake doesn’t give much back-story as far as how or where he found the squirrel. But he documents his quality time with his new friend on snapchat, sharing the videos on Twitter.
“This dude Wilson reckless,” writes Jake in a video where the squirrel hangs on his arm as Jake drives. Apparently, Jake has named his new friend Wilson.
Wilson enjoys perching on Jake’s shoulder, clinging to the front of Jake’s shirts, cuddling in Jake’s hoodie… He even enjoys doing Jake’s hair. “If I eat Wilson eats” writes Jake, feeding the tiny animal.
Jake told Buzzfeed that he had tried releasing Wilson into the wild, but Wilson would just wait for Jake in a tree and then run back inside after him.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. One day, Jake checked Wilson’s tree, and his little friend was no longer there. “I’ll never forget the day I met this squirrel.” tweeted Jake. Hope you’re doing big things now. You weren’t just a squirrel to me. You were my son.”
