“He Chose To Want To Learn.” Teacher Takes On Unexpected Student: Her Dad.

A preschool teacher decided to add a very special person to her list of students: Her beloved dad!

Every day, Lucy Flores teaches kids how to read and write. In doing so, she’s given more thought about the fact that her dad never even had the opportunity to learn how to write his own name. For this reason, she decided she could be the perfect teacher for him!

“I think this is the perfect way of letting people know that it doesn’t matter how young you are – you can teach someone,” said Lucy. “It’s about the willingness that that person wants to do it.”

Lucy says her Spanish-speaking dad, Luciano, was a little hesitant at first. His desire to learn, however, was greater than anything… and so the lessons began!

Lucy posted a TikTok of her dad where he was practicing how to write his name. This is the first video that Lucy posted of her dad’s journey which now has more than two million views – and counting!

After getting overwhelming support from the TikTok community, Lucy has been posting more videos to show her dad’s progress. She also posted a video where she shared a little bit about her father’s background and why he never had the opportunity to learn how to read and write.

According to Lucy, her dad was born in Mexico and had a rough childhood. He grew up very poor and had to drop out of school after first grade so that he could work to provide for his family. Then, when he was 15 years old, he moved to the States.

Two years later, he reunited with Lucy’s mom (his now wife) before finally moving back to the U.S. when Lucy was 3 years old. Ever since then, he’s been working in construction.

“Because he worked in construction, it’s not something where you have to sign things,” said Lucy. “It’s more math, which he’s really good at. He said that he didn’t tell his friends or anyone around him that he didn’t have this ability so that’s how he got by.”

Lucy gives her dad writing lessons three days a week for two hours – and the hard work has paid off. Luciano can now write his name, knows the vowels, and he is even starting to read books!

“Overall, I’m just so excited that he chose to want to learn,” said Lucy.

Luciano’s story has definitely touched thousands of hearts and proves that it is never too late to learn.

We just want to say congratulations to Luciano for all that he has accomplished so far and to his patient daughter who is using her skills to help him thrive!

Watch Luciano learning how to read a book below, and don’t forget to share with a friend.
