Dog Was Lonely In Shelter After House Fire, Until He Found Stuffed Elephant Best Friend.

When Smokey’s Ohio owners lost their home to a house fire, Smokey went from lively and joyful to lonely and depressed at a local animal shelter. His family simply wasn’t able to care for him after the devastating fire. The only thing capable of lifting his spirits was his pet stuffed elephant.

His elephant friend became such a source of comfort from the loss of his home that Smokey took him everywhere. He couldn’t go anywhere without missing his friend.

The two even became known as a pair, which led shelter personnel to dictate the message “keep my elephant with me”on Smokey’s information tag.

Althogh his elephant helped, Smokey still struggled with missing his family. His frequent growling led the shelter believe he should visit a foster home in an attempt to bring back some of his personality and provide a renewed sense of peace.

A short time in a foster home made all the difference, and Smokey and his pet elephant returned to the shelter just in time to cross paths with volunteers from another organization, I Have a Dream Rescue Organization.

Although the volunteers were originally there to look at another animal, the Smokey-elephant pair captivated their attention.

Moved by Smokey’s story and his favorite friend, I Have a Dream Rescue agreed to care for Smokey and his elephant until the family whose home was destroyed could bring Smokey home. Alternatively, the team will provide Smokey with everything he needs until he finds another family who will take him in.

Today, Smokey is eagerly awaiting his return to a family, and all involved parties have been encouraged by the publicity Smokey’s journey has drawn it. They hope the situation will serve as a catalyst for the placement of even more loving animals into energetic and capable homes.
