Sometimes, when we think everything is just perfect, life comes along and knocks us down. For Simon Cowell, that happened quite literally. The America’s Got Talent star had an accident in 2020 that profoundly changed him. Simon had an accident while riding an electric bicycle that left him so seriously injured that he had to have a six-hour surgery to help heal his broken back.

“It was painful, it wasn’t great,” he told Today. But Simon Cowell believes that the accident made him a healthier person.
“However, I was so unfit before the accident. I didn’t know how unfit I was until I had to do all this stuff afterwards,” Simon recalled. “And I’m like, ‘My God.’ Things like that, I believe happened for a reason.”
Simon Cowell Is Strangely Grateful For The Accident
Well, perhaps grateful isn’t the best word, but the accident did open Simon Cowell’s eyes.
“It could have been a lot worse. When I saw the X-ray, I really nearly smashed my spine to pieces, so I literally wouldn’t [have] been able to walk,” he told Extra not long after the accident.
Simon Cowell said that while his accident was very serious and could have been even worse, it didn’t discourage him from riding his bike. He plans to stay with it to help him remain healthy.
Simon Cowell has a lot to be healthy for. Not only does he change lives on AGT, he’s changed his own. Simon and his fiancé Lauren Silverman share a son, Eric, born in 2014. Becoming a dad made Simon a new person.
“Before Eric, my life was 99 percent work. I was obsessed with it,” Cowell told The Sun in 2023. “Now Eric is around, I don’t work through the night anymore. If he hadn’t come along, God knows what would have happened.”
