A two-photo collage. The first shows a text that reads: Call me. The second photo shows a man talking. Text on the image shows what he's saying: What text messages mean to an anxious person.

Texting can make communicating with others so much easier — most of the time, anyway. But if you’re like me and have anxiety issues, you know that all it takes is a simple text message to increase those anxious feelings. It’s not an easy struggle to deal with, at times, but it’s nice to remember that you’re not alone. Thankfully, folks like Aaron Downs are here to remind us that, sometimes, humor is the best way to cope with our struggles.

Aaron is a content creator, songwriter, and sound maker. And based on one of his most popular videos, he’s also someone who understands what it’s like to overanalyze text messages. In this light-hearted video, he translates what texts look like to us anxious folks in a way that’s both hilarious and a little too accurate!

As someone who relates to Aaron, I can confirm that this list is accurate. He starts with a basic one that I feel most people know, even those of us who don’t consider themselves to be an anxious person: K. But what does this message mean to an anxious person, exactly?

“You’re mad at me,” Aaron explains.

This is the very same explanation he gives for most of the text message examples, though there are variations. He even goes over what it’s like to see the indicator that someone is in the middle of writing their reply.

“You’re writing a dissertation of why you are mad at me,” he says.

As silly as it may seem at times, the anxiety folks feel over text messages is real. But when we take a moment to talk to others about how they make us feel and why, including in humorous ways like Aaron, it helps remind us that our fears aren’t always based on logic or reality.

So, the next time you get one of these anxiety-inducing messages, just remember, you’re not alone. Or, hey, maybe send them this video!
