As he often did during his 12 years as Pope, the holy father shared messages on X up until the day he died. On Easter Sunday, he posted five separate messages, one of which read, “I would like us to renew our hope that #peace is possible! From the Holy Sepulchre, the Church of the Resurrection, where this year #Easter is being celebrated by Catholics and Orthodox on the same day, may the light of peace radiate throughout the Holy Land and the entire world.”

His very last post was short and sweet. It said, “Christ is risen! These words capture the entire meaning of our existence, for we were not made for death but for life.”

The news of Pope Francis’ death saddened many who shared condolences on social media.

One wrote on X, “Rest in peace. You were a light in dark times.”

Another shared, “What a beautiful last post from our Holy Father. Let us pray that God shows mercy on his soul and that he joins our spiritual ancestors in Heaven!”

This person agreed, “Rest in Peace, Holy Father. Your words will resonate forever.”
