Psychologist Shares Top 5 Tips To Help You Get Yourself Out Of Bed.

Sometimes getting out of bed can feel like an impossible task – especially right now.

For many of us, the novel coronavirus has thrown off our regular routines and turned our worlds upside down. In this uncertain time, finding the motivation to be productive can be a huge challenge, but according to Dr. Selena Snow, a psychologist, we can change our mindsets with a few small adjustments. Here are five tips for meeting each morning head-on.

1. Break large tasks down.

It’s always easier to focus on one step at a time, so if you have an overwhelming project, create a to-do list of small tasks. You’ll feel more accomplished with each item you check off!

2. Set manageable goals for yourself.

Whatever the task, Dr. Snow said, “Start small, and then add more to the goal so that you can achieve a feeling of accomplishment without becoming overwhelmed and opting to stay in bed.” For example, try committing to an online exercise routine a few days a week instead of every day – or even once a week!

3. Incorporate a new activity into your morning routine.

Dr. Snow suggests listening to a podcast at a certain time so you always have something to look forward to, although it can be anything! Go for a run, read a chapter of your favorite book, or sing the song you can’t get out of your head.

4. Make plans with someone.

The best way to keep yourself accountable is by committing to something with another person – even in quarantine! Whether you have a scheduled phone call or video chat, give yourself a great reason to get out of bed.

5. Make time for self-care and activities you enjoy.

Whether you’re working long hours or not at all, be sure to do at least one thing you love every day. From at-home boxing to baking, it doesn’t matter as long as it brings you a smile!

“Review your plan for the day and create some balance so that you intend to accomplish some chores and work, but also carve out time to relax and engage in pleasant activities,” Dr. Snow explained.

Coping with COVID-19 can be extremely difficult, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Let’s all make the most of our time at home and take Dr. Snow’s suggestions to heart. Each day is a gift, pandemic or not.
