The first part of the clip explains why it is crucial to keep your back to your vehicle. People can attack from any direction. While pumping gas, most people are slightly distracted. It’s a simple activity that doesn’t require your full attention, so your mind wanders. That’s normal human behavior. Thieves know this too.
With your back to the vehicle, you cut off one direction of potential approach. It’s a lot easier to scan 180 degrees than it is 360 degrees. Whether it is three in the morning or the middle of the day, keeping yourself safe while pumping gas should be a priority for everyone.

After explaining how to protect your periphery by cutting your active approach area, he then explained what to do if you get approached and have no weapon. It may not be optimal, but there is another gas station safety tip: if you are pumping gas, you do have a weapon.
If someone approaches you at a pump with ill intent, Scott hints at spraying the assailant with gasoline. It isn’t pretty, but it can be effective. It might only slow the assailant down enough to allow you to run away to safety. He doesn’t mention it in the video, but aim for the face. Gasoline in the eyes will disable your attacker, slowing them down further.
