Pope Francis inviting dozens of comedians to the Sistine Chapel was not on my 2024 bingo card. However, this humorous and heartwarming gathering is actually as sweet as could be.

Pope Francis invited just over 100 comedians to the chapel to come together in celebration. He sought to build a link between comedy and the Catholic Church, and he gave a powerful speech about the power of laughter.
“The prefect told me that in Italy, they say that a smile makes good blood,” started the Pope.
“So I said, instead of a speech, I’ll do this *waves hands* so that we’ll all have more smiles and laughs.”
After his speech, the comedians were able to greet Pope Francis. I can honestly say, I never anticipated seeing a real image of Jimmy Fallon shaking the Pope’s hand!
But they sure did. Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Rock, and Whoopi Goldberg were among the comedians in attendance at Pope Francis’s event.
This hard-to-believe event was actually live-streamed by the Vatican, so you can log on and watch it in its entirety. I love the idea of bringing together the more traditional aspects of society with some that are lighthearted.
I mean, if we can’t all laugh — what’s the point?!
What are people saying?
Folks in the comments were just as shocked, amazed, and delighted as I was in witnessing the clip from this event.
“The whole world needs more SMILES,” wrote one fan of the comedian/Pope Francis collaboration.
“Can’t wait for Colbert this coming Monday night !! It’s going to be EPIC!!!” said another, excited to hear more about the experience.
I myself am eager to see if Pope Francis is going to start his comedy tour soon. Maybe he’s just looking to learn from the best!
