Retirement is a huge milestone for most people. After 35 years, Lindsey Pritchard’s pilot dad was ready for retirement. He was not ready for what happened as he walked up the ramp from the plane after his last flight. The gate had decorations for his arrival, but there was a bigger surprise for this retiring hero.

We’re not sure what he might have been expecting, but it certainly wasn’t what he got. In addition to the decorations, his entire family was standing at the gate wearing Hawaiian shirts and decked out for a party. There was hooting and hollering a-plenty as the pilot walked steadily toward his earned retirement.
The FAA has a mandatory retirement age of 65 for commercial airline pilots. We’re not sure if Lindsey’s dad is 65 or if he is retiring early after 35 years of letting good take flight. He appears to be in good physical shape, so we suspect he might be retiring early to spend more time with his family. And since they all met him at the airport, he can start right away!

Although airlines don’t allow family into the arrival area, Lindsey and her family got a special “ticket” from American Airlines for this event. The first hug of his retirement went to the pilot’s mom in the wheelchair. The sweet moment is a forever memory for them.
Putting some facts together, we are reasonably sure the family is in Hawaii or has just returned from there. The pilot is wearing a lei as he deplaned from his retirement flight. The entire family is wearing the bright, bold, flowered Hawaiian shirts popular on the islands.
May this pilot’s retirement be blessed with clear skies.
